Sculptural works integrating mechanical time within permanent form.
Ashan Samarasinghe
Founder, Arkinesse
Ashan Samarasinghe is a Sri Lankan-born artist and designer based in Boston, and the founder of Arkinesse, a sculptural design atelier exploring the integration of mechanical time within sculptural form.
For years, Ashan has worked professionally in the period-correct restoration of high-end antique mechanical clocks, developing deep technical fluency in traditional horological systems, precision tolerances, and historical movement construction. This hands-on engagement with timekeeping mechanisms forms the structural foundation of his sculptural practice.
Prior to establishing Arkinesse, he competed internationally as a ranked ballroom dancer, cultivating a disciplined understanding of balance, proportion, and controlled motion principles that now inform the measured integration of movement within static mass.
Under Arkinesse, he produces limited-edition bronze works integrating engineered mechanical systems within sculptural forms. Each piece is cast and individually patinated, creating material nuance within a deciplined formal language.
His work centers on permanence and spatial gravity, exploring how measured motion can inhabit architectural space without spectacle. Arkinesse operates with a focus on structural clarity, material rigor, and long-term cultural relevance.
Studio
Arkinesse operates as a focused atelier dedicated to limited-edition bronze works integrating mechanical time. Production is intentionally restrained, with each edition cast and patinated individually. The studio prioritizes structural clarity, material integrity, and long-term permanence over trend or volume.
